A seven-year-old boy was pulled from the surf at Palm Beach after getting caught in a powerful shore break, prompting a swift rescue by bystanders and surf lifesavers before paramedics rushed him to hospital in a stable condition.
Just after 8.30 a.m. on Friday, 17 April, NSW Ambulance was called to Ocean Road at Palm Beach following reports of a child in distress in the water. The boy had been swimming in front of the Palm Beach Pavilion when he was knocked over by a wave and swallowed seawater.
People nearby moved quickly to help. A Surf Life Saving NSW drone operator preparing for the morning and an off-duty member of the Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club responded first, calling Triple Zero (000) and assisting the child out of the water. Northern Beaches Council lifeguards, who were about to begin patrol, also arrived and joined the response.
The boy’s parents were at the scene as first aid was given, including oxygen support, while waiting for paramedics. Two NSW Ambulance crews, including responders from Avalon Ambulance Station and Inspector Christian Holmes, reached the beach shortly after 8.45am.
Paramedics assessed the boy as stable before transporting him to Northern Beaches Hospital just after 9.00 a.m.
The rescue highlights how quickly conditions can change along the coastline, even during early morning hours before patrols are fully underway, and how nearby responders often play a key role in those first critical moments.
